One of the basic functions of a computer is to handle files and folders. PCs today can handle very long names so you can be as descriptive as you want with your files and folders. But sometimes this can work against you.
So we're working on moving some folders over to a new server when we come across this gem. I'll comment as we drill down through the folders to the actual file that was giving us the trouble:
Shared - This makes sense. We want to be able to share this file with others.
Project Files - That's good. Let's keep all the shared project files in here.
2006 - So this is for shared project files from 2006? I'm starting to raise an eyebrow.
Preliminary Draft - Alright, now we're starting to get redundant but I can sort of see the need to share any 2006 project file preliminary drafts in this folder. Four folders deep now. Something's not right.
Old - Ah. Reality is starting to set in. Just be sure to keep only your old 2006 project file preliminary drafts that need to be shared here.
Revisions - Revisions? Are you kidding me? Why would we be sharing the revisions of old 2006 project file preliminary drafts? This is getting silly.
Keep - Keep? You're pulling my leg right? That's seven folders deep now.
Draft Version2 - For heaven's sake... The file we're saving is a draft version two old revision of a preliminary draft of a shared 2006 project file?
Old - Old again. Huh? This file better be ancient.
Graphics - I knew it! It's a picture!
Proofread - It's a good thing they proofread their old kept graphic revisions and some such else...
Apendix A - We're twelve folders deep now. That warm glow is the Earth's core coming up.
3.1 - I wonder if it's an old draft version?
Water District - Ok, now that's just plain silly.
Image Library 2005-2006 (do not delete) - That's right. If you are down here with all the Image Library files, you better not be deleting them.
A - Are we there yet, Mommy? I gotta go to the bathroom.
Project Manager Comments - YAY! We made it! Here's the bottom!
Now, what's the name of that file? Oh yeah, here it is:
Block Group 6, Census Tract Santa Barbara County - Reference Map - American FactFinder_files.doc
Good thing they gave it a descriptive name or we would never have found it under these seventeen layers of folders.
My suggestion is to create a "What Were You Thinking" folder and move it to there. Better yet, print that sucker out and put it under the leg of that wobbling coffee table.

So it also turns out that the person who was managing this folder also has the tendancy to write her entire emails in the subject line....
I can't confirm this but I belive microsoft has a 200 character naming convention limit on file/folder paths. After that you will get all kinds of epic errors...
At one point I saw a file that exceeded 350 characters and also had just about every know symbol (i.e, $ % * > < # %) used to describe a money transfer between two accounts. The irony of it all you ask? Hmm... the excel spread sheet had approximately 4 cells populated to say {cellA1 = 12/06/06} {cellA2 = $2000} {cellB1 = 12/07/06} {cellB2 = $3000}
Crap like this deserves a switch punch to the lower midsection.
LMAO!!!! Poor grumpy smoker!!
I can hear it now...
"Would you restore my 'Keep' folder? Someone deleted it."
...or my father who has 6 bookmarks for www.cnn.com, 4 bookmarks for www.usatoday.com, etc.... each time he bookmarked he evidentally forgot the prior time he bookmarked. Last I heard he bookmarked usatoday.com again this morning.
That's great Jose! I need to write about that one too. Welcome to Grumpy Tech Support.
