So I get this call from a user that is trying to install something on his machine. Company policy specifically states that users are not to install software on their own without notifying the Information Technology department. In fact, this particular user has complained at least once a month that his PC is just too slow and he should get a new one.
Now I'm not part of the group of people that decides who gets a new PC, so complaining to tech support about it does absolutely no good. It's amazing though that every time this person has complained to me, I can remote control his PC and run a spyware scan that ends up finding three or four different Trojans. Not to mention the dozens of toolbars for Internet Explorer or other adware. His machine will run much smoother for about a month and then the cycle repeats.
Anyways, this user has been so troublesome this year that he was actually denied access to his own machine. So of course it was only a matter of time before we would get this call. It's like watching NASCAR. Eventually, you are going to see a wreck. The trade off? Well it was over 9 weeks ago that the setting was changed. Since that day, he has not once complained of a slow machine. So in the end, he will just have to call us every time he wants to install something, whether he likes it or not. Oh, and I didn't let him install that game he called about either.
